954 Transplant

How, this project originally started out was, about a month out of my extended warranty (seems like stuff like this always happens) 2nd gears started to pop out of gear and it was progressively getting worst. Seems like when anything goes wrong, it happens after the warrantee is up. So I asked the Honda Stealer if there was anything they could do. I was hoping they would pass it as still under warranty, both the dealer and I would make out. The dealer would still get the paid to do the work and I would be happy to get my bike fixed.

So that didn’t happen so I had to really think about what I was going to do. So it came down to either me ripping the bike down and repairing it or finding a new motor and just swapping it out. So after a lot of research I found out that a 954 would easily go right into a 929. So the decision started to became obvious, it ended up being a really nice upgrade. From talk on various forums and articles, supposally the 954's usually dyno around 8-10 HP more than the 929. Also there’s a better chance finding a 954 motor in good condition than a 929 motor. So that was that and I started my 954 motor hunt.

I came across a 954 motor on eBay in excellent condition with only 2500 miles on it for $1200. I thought about it and I felt like it was worth it so I decided to go ahead and bid on it. I was a little skeptical about sending $1200 over the internet in hopes that they do the right thing on their end and don’t screw you over or send you a bad motor. So there was definitely a chance to take. In the end I was very luck with the deal and found a great motor for the transplant.

Well are some pics of how it went....

Since the 929's motor holds everything together, its a little tricky to support the bike up while removing the motor and swing arm. Once the motor is out of the bike the bike justs wants to flop around. I ended up just using a rachet strap and lifting the bike from the rear pegs.

Here are pictures of the bike without the motor. I ended up using my wheel chock and that was the trick to keep the bike nice and upright. I am glad I bought that, it just paid for itself....

Here are pictures of the 929 motor out of the bike.

Heres cleanup and prep of the 954.

The 954 swing arm is much nicer than the 929 swing arm is.

Here is the 954 all ready to be installed.

I purchased this motor off of eBay in hopes that everything the seller said about the motor was true. The seller said that the motor had only 2500 miles. At first I didnt really believe it, but after full inspection and comparing components to my 929, which mine 929 only had 10,000 miles on it. It looks very believable. Here are what the 954 plug looked like in comparisson to my 929 w/10K miles.

954 motor installed.

One of the issues when swapping the 929 out with a 954 is that the thottle bodies and injectors are differnt. In order to use the 954 throttle bodies you will need the 954 harness. Since I didnt get the injector harness with the motor, the 954 injectors would not plug into the 929 harness. So I ordered and 954 injector harness from ronayers.com in hopes that it will mate up with the rest of the 929 harness. So for the time being I just installed the 929 injectors and thottle bodies on the 954 motor.

Wrapping up....

Here she is, 98% back together. Just have to install a new chain and muffler clamp.
